Controlled Resistive Heating of Carbon Fiber Composites

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Temperature control is the key to effective resistive heating for composite rigidization. The ability to monitor and even control the temperature provides an active control strategy in prescribing and predicting the stiffness of the hardened composite. Further, understanding how the material responds to an electrical input determines both the type of control to be used as well as the level of control that can be attained. This chapter investigates how temperature control of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer composites is implemented. The material was investigated experimentally and modeled analytically for use in the final control scheme. A PID feedback controller was applied to the resistive heating process and the control gains were then experimentally tuned. Infrared imaging of the composite during heating was also performed as a method for visualizing the heating process.

Active Composite Rigidization Using Temperature-controlled Resistive Heating

An active approach for initiating rigidization in carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites unites electrical resistivity to mechanical stiffening. Temperature control is implemented in efforts to reduce the curing time of the composite and to increase control of the curing process. Specifically, proportional-integral (PI) feedback control of internal resistive (Joule) heating establish...

Out-of-oven Curing of Polymeric Composites via Resistive Microheaters Comprised of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Networks

The promise of enhanced physical properties and multifunctionality has led many groups to study polymer matrix composites (PMCs) reinforced with nanoscale elements, such as nanofibers, nanowires, and nanotubes. However, the application of such material in next-generation aerospace architectures is currently limited by the geometrical constraints and high energy costs of traditional manufacturin...

Toward Rigidization of Inflatable Structures

Active rigidization of a simple structure demonstrates how internal resistive heating can be applied to cause permanent physical strengthening of inflatable structures. Rigidizing a real structure brings to light the issues associated with incorporating the rigidizable resincoated tow onto a separate substrate and provides a useful example of the strength gained through effective rigidization. ...

Effect of Fiber Surface Treatment on Wear Characteristics of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polyamide 6 Composites

Ozone modification method and air-oxidation were used for the surface treatment of polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based carbon fiber. The surface characteristics of carbon fibers were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The interfacial properties of carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (CF/PA6) composites were investigated by means of the single fiber pull-out tests. As a result...
